In the event of an emergency, the 406 MHz beacons can be use to pinpoint a persons location anywhere on the planet using the Cospas/Sarsat satellite system. When activated, (just like an emergency locator transmitter)
it transmits a digitally coded signal on the 406MHz frequency. This signal is received by a satellite and relayed to a ground station. The ground station calculates the location and transmits the information to the US Mission Control Center.
